How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming

This is a holiday short from the How to Train Your Dragon series. It takes place around the time of the epilogue of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. It’s directed by Tim Johnson (Antz, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, Over the Hedge, Home).

Synopsis: Hiccup’s children have never met the dragons, but as New Berk takes a few days off to celebrate Snoggletog, the Berkians decide to put on a holiday pageant to teach the children about Berk’s history with dragons. Unbeknown to the Berkians, Toothless’ family comes to watch.

Review: It’s a cute and spirited short, though it goes by in a flash. DreamWorks has something special with Hiccup’s two kids and Toothless’ adorable dragonglings. They’d be right to milk that all they can. It’s fun to see the little family dynamic of Hiccup and Astrid and their children.

I also thought it was a pretty funny how they write the pageant to make Hiccup’s father into the hero. Hiccup acknowledges that his father was far from perfect, but in the end he’s willing to embellish his legacy as a way to ensure he’ll always be honored. It’s super touching, isn’t?

There’s another short that’s basically one of those fireplace videos that you can put on for relaxation or just to set a festive mood. It shows the fireplace inside Hiccup and Astrid’s home with music playing and various characters step in and out of the frame.
